The second chance trope in romance novels offers a compelling narrative arc that resonates deeply with many readers. And yet, it’s never been one of my favourites. Despite my scepticism I have recently read a cracking second chance romance in the form of Inevitable Ella by VH Nicolson. Having read that, I felt compelled to reassess my … erm, assessment of this trope. So, what’s the appeal?
The second chance romance trope centres on characters who, having parted ways due to various circumstances, get an unexpected opportunity to rekindle their romance. The appeal of these stories lies in the universal themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the enduring power of love.

I have to say, I didn’t ‘get it’ for a long while. Now I do. This trope is all about realising a fantasy that literally everyone who has ever had their heart broken shares: to somehow, somewhere, someday, get a do-over with the one that got away.
And for it to this time, magically, turn into the happy ever after you were robbed of the first time around.
Once I realised that was the heart of the trope (pun intended) I suddenly found it a great deal more appealing! And now genuinely understand why everyone raves about it so much.
At its core, the second chance trope is about hope. It taps into the common wish to revisit and perhaps right the wrongs of the past. In literature, these stories often involve protagonists who have undergone personal growth after their initial breakup. This growth is crucial as it adds depth to the narrative, providing a believable foundation for the renewed relationship.
Afterall, if one or both of the people involved hadn’t grown in some way, the likelihood is the relationship would just fail all over again. And to be honest, that’s why it never really appealed to me before; in the case of my own failed romances I’m fully aware the people I lost still have the same ‘problems’ associated with them. That’s not to say they’re bad people, but when you break up because someone is highly ambitious and moves to the other side of the world for a job, and they’re still there, while you still don’t want to move, it’s tough to see how the outcome could be different. A pathological cheater you know full well still cheats on everyone they’re with is not going to miraculously abstain from cheating on you again.
But what if that wandering lover returns, his wanderlust sated, the dream job landed, and he’s delighted it happens to be in your hometown? What if he realised you’re more important than his career, and came back to build a different kind of success with you? What if the cheater was cheated on, and had a sudden epiphany that this is the hell they put you through, and they’re desperate to make it up to you?
Circumstances change. And people can change.
The hope that something will change and the person we lost will somehow be ours forever is an incredibly powerful thought.

As with a lot of romance tropes, the second chance trope can manifest in several ways, each bringing a unique twist to the theme:
