Dreaming Of You, Plus Tempt Me at Twilight And Seduce Me at Sunrise By Lisa Kleypas

Lisa Kleypas is the queen of the I Hate Everyone But You trope and it’s a recurring core theme in three of the five books in her series, The Hathaways. Kev embodies the epitome of brooding and emotional restraint, often coming across as an oblivious and closed-off individual. Deep down, he holds a genuine affection for his adopted family, even if he struggles to express it openly, so he doesn’t quite hate everyone. But given how deeply its buried, and how central his misanthropy is to his character he definitely epitomises this trope (for me at least!).

To Desire A Devil By Elizabeth Hoyt

Reynaud, a man burdened by his past. He bears scars, both visible and hidden, that have shaped him into a hardened man with an unyielding demeanour who refuses to show vulnerability to anyone, except for (reluctantly) Beatrice, with whom he shares a tenuous connection. A similar theme of emotional detachment is embodied by Valentine, the Duke of Montgomery, whose sociopathic nature has shielded him from forming attachments. If you enjoy this trope it’s well worth also reading Duke of Sin, as it’s kind of hilarious to watch him to discover – to his abject horror – that he is actually capable of falling in love and has caught some serious feels.

Drag Me Up By R.M. Virtues

I love a good retelling, be it a fairytale retelling or mythology. I was actually shook by this one, in which R.M. Virtues presents us with a modern version of the Hades and Persephone myth, unfolding amidst a casino Cirque production. It sounds bizarre but Hades’ nature coupled with his deep feelings for Persephone make this a surprisingly touching read. He has no desire to be anywhere near people, but after spending her life trying to escape her mother’s shadow (literally going to hell to do it), he understands Persephone needs her time in the sun. 

The Highwayman And The Hunter By Kerrigan Byrne

Okay you can pretty much add the whole of Kerrigan Byrne’s Victorian Rebels series to this list, but the two that really have central characters who epitomise this trope are books one and two. In the first two instalments of this historical romance series, The Highwayman presents us with a gripping novel that entwines the lives of a fearless highwayman and a resilient widow in a tale of danger, intrigue, and unexpected love. Meanwhile, The Hunter entangles the lives of a relentless hunter and a resilient woman, as they navigate a treacherous path filled with secrets, betrayal, and an irresistible connection that defies all odds. 

Lord Of Scoundrels By Loretta Chase

Loretta Chase is a renowned historical romance novel that promises a delightful, angst-ridden read as it introduces us to Sebastian, the hero of the story. With the author’s masterful storytelling, readers are in for a captivating and emotionally charged journey through the tumultuous world of love, passion, and redemption.

Wicked And The Wallflower (And Pretty Much All The Bareknuckle Bastards Series) By Sarah MacLean

Sarah MacLean’s Bareknuckle Bastards series features (quite unsurprisingly, given the name) some absolute jackasses. As much as you hate them, however, you also kinda come to love them because they fall so hard for their girls. The shining example definitely comes in the form of Devil and Felicity in Wicked and the Wallflower, but if you’re a fan of this trope this whole series is for you!.
