This pragmatic agreement soon kindles a surprising and deep romantic connection, showcasing Kennedy’s flair for blending emotional depth with lighthearted banter.
The plot thickens as their initial transactional relationship develops into a complex bond, exploring themes of vulnerability, past trauma, and personal growth. For someone who hates sports I’ve become disturbingly obsessed with Sports Romance (it started with Hunting Eden and has been a growing obsession ever since!). Despite the new found love of the genre, I was still surprised how much I enjoyed this novel. New Adult and Young Adult books often miss the mark for me. They either feel very unrealistic for how teenagers and young adults actually act (more like the rose-tinted views their parents have of how they behave rather than reality), or they’re written like adults in young bodies, which is both disturbing and again, unrealistic.
The Deal neatly avoided either unfortunate situation and delivered a college romance that felt believable and genuine, despite the usual contrivances necessary or making the plot work.

If you love a good Sports Romance but aren’t keen on younger characters I highly recommend VH Nicholson’s books, which I think are all standalone novels, though some interconnect through characters.

The book contains a slow-burn romance that builds up to some steamy moments between the characters, which are integral to their relationship development but are balanced with a strong focus on emotional connections and character growth. While it may not be the spiciest read, it’s such a satisfying romance to read in other ways that you don’t really miss the extra spice.
