If you’re looking for your next romance read, whether you’re an avid fan of saucy stories or a newcomer testing the waters, you’re probably wondering who the best romance authors are. That sounds like an easy question. It isn’t.
There are romance novelists who shaped entire subgenres. Others dominate their niche so completely they’ve become shorthand for it. Some deliver consistently brilliant love stories. Others have written one novel so iconic it still defines conversations about the genre decades later.
From literary icons like Jane Austen and Emily Brontë to modern romantasy powerhouses like Sarah J. Maas, dark romance disruptors like S.T. Abby, and Western trailblazers like Beverly Jenkins, the romance genre is hardly short on heavy hitters. Below, you’ll find my personal ranking of the best romance authors and the novels that define their brilliance. I’ve read far more romance writers than I could ever squeeze into a top ten, so if your favourite isn’t here, it doesn’t mean I haven’t read them. It just means they didn’t make my cut.
Some are here because everything they write is dangerously bingeable. Others because they shaped an entire subgenre. A few because they’ve written a single novel so iconic it refuses to leave my brain. And yes, some are here because when they hit, they hit so hard I’m willing to overlook their flaws.
Top 10 Romance Novelists And Their Best Novels
I’m breaking down each writer’s style, subgenre, and standout books in more detail down below. But for those of you with busy lives or short attention spans, here’s my completely subjective, deeply biased, defend-it-in-the-comments picks for the top ten romance novelists. And for the sake of thoroughness, I’ve picked their best books to create a two-birds-one-stone type of deal. Consider this my top 10 best romance novels list as well, and be aware, I’ve picked my actual favourites not just first books in my favourite series.
Yes, I know people are missing. Epic authors. Some of you will hate my book choice and think I’m insane. But the problem with a top ten is there are only ten spots.
Consider this my highly opinionated picks for the best romance novels of all time. I stand by my favourites (though I cannot guarantee they won’t change in future as I read more!).
#1 Emily Brontë – Wuthering Heights
A brutal, obsessive love story set on the Yorkshire moors that redefined what romantic intensity could look like. Emily wrote obsessive, destructive love before ‘dark romance’ was a thing, and never once apologised for it.
#2 Sarah J. Maas – Kingdom of Ash
An epic, high-stakes finale that weaves war, sacrifice, and enduring love into a romantasy climax that refuses to pull its punches. Sarah turned longing, power, and slow-burn tension into a global romantasy empire, making yearning commercially unstoppable.
@briarblackbooks These are my top 10 best Romance authors. And I will 💀 on that hill. Particularly if said hill is windswept. On the Yorkshire moors. And I expire in the arms of Heathcliffe No, YOU’RE dramatic 😂 #Bookstagram #Bookish #BookRecs #RomanceReads #WutheringHeights ♬ Risk It All - Bruno Mars
#3 Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus
A slow-burning, star-crossed love story set inside a mysterious, enchanted circus where magic is both spectacle and battleground. Erin proved romance can be quiet, atmospheric, and exquisitely restrained while still emotionally wrecking you.
#4 S.T. Abby
The Scarlet Angel
As Lana’s revenge campaign intensifies, she’s forced to eliminate a rival predator while the FBI profiler hunting her (who also happens to be her boyfriend) edges closer to the truth. S.T. Abby proves a girl can have an epic romance without surrendering her purpose.
#5 Robyn Carr
Virgin River
When Mel moves to a remote mountain town to escape her grief, she finds herself entangled in other people’s trauma as much as her own. Robyn turns small-town romance into an emotional blood sport and somehow still gives everyone a happy ending.
#6 Julia Quinn
The Viscount Who Loved Me
A marriage-of-convenience romance built on bickering, stubborn pride, and a man determined to wed one sister while falling hopelessly for the other. Historically questionable, utterly shallow, but such delightful vibes and pure devotion to trope you genuinely don’t care.
#7 Lisa Kleypas
It Happened One Autumn
A clash-heavy Regency romance where an outspoken American heiress and a rigid English aristocrat battle pride, desire, and society’s expectations. Lisa writes addictive comfort reads you binge hard, then wish you’d never read, just so you could read them again for the first time.
#8 Beverly Jenkins
Night Hawk
Rancher. Bounty hunter. Post–Civil War frontier. Sparks fly before either of them are ready for it. Beverly is an undiscovered gem whose iconic Western descriptions and powerful POC representation kickstarted my cowboy romance obsession, and who deserves far more hype than she gets.
#9 Jane Austen
Mansfield Park
A quietly ruthless romance about morality and social ambition, with the least flashy heroine in the room quietly proving she’s right about everything. Jane’s still outclassing half the genre two centuries later with nothing but wit, sass, and a deep understanding of human psychology.
#10 Laurie Gilmore
The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore
Grumpy, sunshine, cinnamon sugar, and a bookshop so aggressively autumnal it may as well smell like nutmeg. Laurie is a flawed but glorious guilty pleasure, delivering such aggressively cosy seasonal vibes you forgive everything because it feels like a full-body hygge hug.
Major Romance Awards and Industry Recognition
When discussing the best romance authors, industry awards often enter the conversation. The RITA Awards, formerly presented by the Romance Writers of America, were long considered one of the highest honours in romantic fiction, with winners including authors such as Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Lorraine Heath, Beverly Jenkins, Alyssa Cole, and Julie Garwood. The Goodreads Choice Awards regularly spotlight reader favourites across romance and romantasy, with names like Sarah J. Maas and Leigh Bardugo finding strong support there. In the UK, the Romantic Novelists’ Association Awards recognise excellence in romantic fiction and have celebrated both domestic and international voices.
Beyond the headline awards, smaller competitions can be an excellent way to discover emerging talent. The Independent Publisher Book Awards, often referred to as the IPPY Awards, highlight standout titles in the indie publishing world, and if you hone in on the romance categories, you can uncover some real hidden gems. (My own Romantic Suspense novel, Bane, may have won an IPPY for Best Romance. Just saying.)
But while winning an award signals quality (or at least, influence, or popularity) they’re not the only measure of greatness. Some of the most compelling and consistently brilliant romance authors have never won a major award, and that does not make their work any less powerful.

So, Who Are the Best Romance Authors Today?
Now we have my personal biases and obsessions laid out, the question turns to romance novelists as a whole. And I promised you a broader look beyond just my top ten, so let’s dig a little deeper. The Best Foundational Romance Novelists
Before romance splintered into a thousand subgenres and marketing categories, there were a handful of writers who quietly built the foundations. These are the novelists who shaped the emotional architecture of the genre itself. Long before dark romance, romantasy, or small-town slow burns had names, they were already exploring obsession, morality, autonomy, and the complicated mechanics of love. If you want to understand where modern romance began, this is where you start.
Jane Austen – The Mother Of Romantic Fiction
Jane Austen, an esteemed English novelist of the 19th century, is celebrated as one of the most influential literary figures in history. Born on December 16, 1775, in Hampshire, England, Austen’s remarkable wit, astute observations, and remarkable storytelling prowess continue to captivate readers worldwide. Her six completed novels, including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma, not only portrayed the complexities of Regency-era society but also provided incisive social commentary on themes such as love, marriage, class, and gender. Austen’s enduring legacy lies in her ability to craft richly developed characters and timeless narratives, establishing her as a leading figure in the canon of English literature.
While it may be predictable for a list of the best romance authors to start with Jane Austen, there’s a reason for that; in many ways, she was the mother of the genre. Even if you’re not a fan of classic novels, I would urge you to try at least one of Austen’s, if only to see where it all began.
Must Read: Pride And Prejudice
A masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice is a novel that has left an indelible mark on the literary world since its publication in 1813. Set in the early 19th century English countryside, the story follows the Bennet family and their five daughters, particularly the spirited Elizabeth Bennet. Through witty dialogue, Austen weaves a tale of societal expectations, love, and personal growth. The novel artfully explores themes of pride, prejudice, social class, and the pursuit of true happiness. With its timeless charm, memorable characters, and exploration of human nature, Pride and Prejudice has become a beloved classic that continues to captivate readers across generations.
My Personal Favourite By Austen: Mansfield Park
First published in 1814, Mansfield Park follows Fanny Price, the poor relation sent to live with her wealthy cousins at their grand estate. Society barely registers her. The family underestimates her. Most of the room talks over her. And yet Fanny sees everything. Grounded, observant, and painfully aware of the moral rot unfolding around her, she is consistently the only person with any real sense. As flirtations spiral and reputations teeter, Fanny’s quiet integrity becomes the novel’s backbone. She is overlooked, underestimated, and repeatedly proven right, but never smug about it. She is simply decent. That’s what makes her so easy to root for. Of all Austen’s heroines, Fanny feels the most real, the most modern, and the most relatable. You can absolutely imagine her running a ruthless but polite BookTok account while everyone else is busy being dramatic.
The Brontë Sisters – The Storm-Bringers of Romantic Intensity
Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë were not interested in polite courtship or neatly wrapped emotional arcs. Writing in the mid-19th century under male pseudonyms, the sisters carved out a darker, more psychologically complex corner of romantic fiction that still feels startlingly modern. Where Jane Austen dissected drawing rooms, the Brontës dragged love out onto the moors, into crumbling estates, and deep into the messier corners of the human psyche.
Emily Brontë, author of Wuthering Heights, gave us one of the most obsessive, destructive, and enduring love stories ever written. Catherine and Heathcliff are not a healthy couple. They are not aspirational. They are elemental. Emily’s singular novel remains a blueprint for every morally grey, all-consuming romance that followed.
Charlotte Brontë brought a different intensity. In Jane Eyre, she delivered a heroine who demanded dignity, autonomy, and emotional equality long before such ideas were fashionable. Charlotte’s romances burn slower, but they are fiercely principled, grounded in questions of morality, independence, and self-worth.
Anne Brontë, often the quietest of the trio in popular memory, was arguably the most radical. The Tenant of Wildfell Hall tackled alcoholism, abuse, and a woman’s right to leave a destructive marriage with a boldness that shocked Victorian readers. Her approach to love is less gothic thunderstorm and more moral reckoning, but no less powerful for it.
Together, the Brontë sisters expanded what romance could be. Not simply courtship and compatibility, but obsession, endurance, trauma, autonomy, and consequence. Their legacy is not just literary prestige. It is proof that romantic fiction has always had teeth.
Must Read: Wuthering Heights
Published in 1847, Wuthering Heights is not a tidy love story. It is a feral, wind-lashed saga of obsession, pride, revenge, and emotional self-destruction set against the brutal sweep of the Yorkshire moors. At its centre are Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, two characters so bound together they blur the line between love and annihilation. Their connection is not soft or civilised. It is possessive, vengeful, and utterly consuming, spilling across generations and leaving collateral damage in its wake.
Emily Brontë did not write romance as comfort. She wrote it as force. And whether you read it as tragic, toxic, transcendent, or all three, Wuthering Heights remains one of the most intense explorations of romantic obsession ever put on the page.
Best Historical Romance Writers
Historical romance is where reputations matter, rules are rigid, and the tension is often far more about power and position than simple attraction. Whether it’s Regency ballrooms, Civil War battlefields, or the Scottish Highlands, these authors prove that love stories set in the past can feel just as sharp, dramatic, and addictive as anything contemporary.
Alyssa Cole – The Pioneer of Inclusive Love Stories
Cole’s literary repertoire extends beyond a single genre. While she predominantly crafts captivating tales in the realm of historical romance, she also boasts a collection of contemporary novels. Alyssa Cole stands out as an exceptionally remarkable figure within the historical romance subgenre, known for her expertise in crafting stories set during the American Revolution and the Civil War era. Notably, she has made significant strides in promoting diversity within the genre. Many of her characters embody women of colour, and the dramatic essence of her narratives often revolves around the complexities and obstacles faced by interracial couples in historical times.
Must-Read: An Extraordinary Union
Set against the backdrop of the Civil War, this acclaimed novel introduces us to Elle Burns, a former slave who embarks on a perilous undercover mission as a spy for the Union. Along her treacherous journey, she crosses paths with Malcolm McCall, a Pinkerton detective who shares her unwavering commitment to dismantling the Confederacy. However, their connection runs deeper than their shared political motivations.
As danger escalates, Elle and Malcolm find themselves grappling with a crucial choice between their allegiance to their country and the profound love they have discovered.
Tessa Dare – The Duchess of Regency Romance
Tessa Dare, also a New York Times bestselling author, ventures into a distinct realm with her captivating narratives. Rather than solely focusing on the resolution of smouldering sexual tension, Dare’s works fall into the classic category of ‘bodice rippers’. Her titles elegantly reflect her inclination towards Regency romance, inviting readers on a captivating journey through time. From the enchanting pages of Romancing the Duke to the irresistible allure of Say Yes to the Marquess, Dare’s books provide the ideal escapism, transporting readers to a different era and a mesmerising setting.
Must-Read: Do You Want To Start A Scandal (Castles Ever After #4)
Prepare to embark on a captivating journey that blends elements of history, mystery, and romance. The Parkhurst ball sets the stage for a whirlwind of events, as young Charlotte Highwood finds herself entangled in a scandalous situation that falsely implicates her with Piers Brandon, Lord Granville. Now faced with the prospect of an inconvenient marriage to Piers if she fails to prove her innocence, Charlotte must navigate these challenging circumstances.
Initially, she harbours little fondness for Piers. However, as they join forces to uncover the true culprits behind the scandal, Piers reveals unexpected qualities that make him an invaluable ally. Along the way, Charlotte’s feelings evolve, and she questions whether completing their mission is truly what she desires, as her attraction towards Piers grows stronger.
Jude Deveraux – The Luminary of Timeless Love
Jude Deveraux, a renowned author, holds the prestigious title of being a New York Times bestseller, with a remarkable collection of over 40 books. Since 2016, her literary works have garnered an impressive sales record, surpassing 50 million copies. While her expertise lies in historical romance, she also delves into the captivating realms of paranormal and mystery subgenres.
Must Read: A Knight In Shining Armour
Prepare to be transported to the hallowed grounds of an English church, where a modern-day woman named Dougless Montgomery finds herself immersed in sorrow, mourning the loss of her unfaithful boyfriend. As she seeks solace by a weathered tombstone, a remarkable event unfolds before her eyes—an earl from the 16th century emerges, defying the historical accounts that claim he perished in 1564. This unexpected encounter defies all logic and draws Dougless into a mysterious journey through time, as she grapples with the realisation that Nicholas Stafford, the earl, has somehow crossed centuries to be with her.
Deveraux’s masterful storytelling effortlessly weaves together the strands of past and present, intricately entwining the lives of these two protagonists in a tale that explores the depths of love, fate, and the enduring power of the human spirit. As the narrative unfolds, readers are captivated by the richly detailed historical backdrop, the poignant emotions that permeate every page, and the undeniable connection that forms between Dougless and Nicholas. It is a story that will leave readers spellbound, forever etching itself in their hearts and minds as a testament to the timeless nature of love and the indomitable spirit of the human soul.
Julie Garwood – The Maestro of Unforgettable Love Stories
With a remarkable collection of 26 New York Times bestsellers and over 35 million books in print, Julie Garwood stands as a celebrated author in the literary world. She attributes her success to her Irish heritage, which has instilled in her a deep appreciation for captivating and intricate storytelling. While her career began in young adult (YA) fiction, Garwood has since shifted her focus to historical romance, where she has gained immense popularity. Notably, her Highlands’ Lairds series has garnered widespread acclaim, captivating readers with its enchanting tales set in the Scottish highlands.
Must Read: The Secret (Book 1 of Highlands’ Lairds)
Judith Hampton embarks on a courageous voyage from her familiar English abode to the untamed Highlands, driven by her unwavering determination to provide support and comfort to her dear childhood companion during the pivotal time of childbirth. Braving the treacherous paths and unpredictable elements of the Highlands, Judith’s heart is steadfast in its loyalty and commitment. However, little does she anticipate the whirlwind of events that await her upon her arrival.
As Judith steps foot in this rugged and unfamiliar terrain, she finds herself thrust into a clash of wills with the enigmatic and fierce Scottish warrior, Iain Maitland. The intensity of their encounters ignites a tempestuous dance between them, where passion and frustration collide. Judith, torn between her own desires and the constraints of societal expectations, wrestles with conflicting emotions as Iain’s fiery kisses and tender caresses test the boundaries of her resolve.
Lorraine Heath – The Architect of Timeless Love Tales
Lorraine Heath is an essential figure in the realm of romance literature. With a prolific career that began in 2001, she has produced an impressive array of series spanning various subgenres, ranging from historical to paranormal. What sets Heath apart is her unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality works, never compromising on excellence. Readers and critics alike have showered her with accolades, particularly praising the profound emotional depth and well-crafted characters that shine through her writing. If you seek captivating narratives driven by genuine human drama, rather than mere explicit content, Heath’s love stories are an impeccable choice.
That’s one thing I love about listing the best romance authors going; you can have such a contrast. Austen is beyond chase, the likes of Melanie Harlow and Lauren Landish spicy fire, and then there are those who occupy the middle ground. It’s exceptional, because it means there’s always a novel to fit your personal level of comfort when it comes to spiciness, and your current mood!
Must-Read: In Bed With The Devil (Scoundrels of St, James #1)
In the city of London, Lucian Langdon, commonly known as Luke, bears the infamous title of the “devil earl,” burdened by a reputation marred by atrocious deeds. Lady Catherine Mabry finds herself in dire need of assistance, to the extent that she is willing to enter into a pact with him.
Thus commences their association as partners in crime, which, as expected, gradually transforms into something deeper and more profound. The tantalisingly slow development of affection between the roguish scoundrel and the refined lady is accompanied by a substantial societal backdrop, infused with clever and playful allusions to the works of Dickens.
Beverly Jenkins A Trailblazer in Diverse Romance
Beverly Jenkins stands tall as a pioneering force in the world of diverse romance literature. If anything, compiling this list left me more aware of what a gem inclusive romance authors are. For while I stand by my assertion everyone on this list is among the best romance authors out there, you will notice many are almost if not completely exclusively writing straight white women.
Beverly Jenkins, on the other hand, embarked on her writing journey back in the nineties, determined to tell stories that often featured African-American protagonists, illuminating their experiences during times that history had largely overlooked. But Jenkins made it her mission to do more than just rehash tales of slavery. Her storytelling canvas expands between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Movement, offering readers a rich tapestry of black history.
Must-Read: Bring on the Blessings (Blessings #1)
While Jenkins is celebrated for her exceptional talent in weaving historical romances, “Bring on the Blessings” presents a splendid entry point for newcomers to her work. In this contemporary gem, we meet Bernadine Brown, a resilient 52-year-old woman who takes her wealthy, unfaithful husband to court and emerges victorious with a staggering $275 million settlement.
Determined to channel her newfound wealth into something meaningful, Bernadine’s vision extends beyond a single individual. Instead, she sets her sights on an entire town: Henry Adams, Kansas. This historic town, founded by freed slaves after the Civil War, captures her heart. In an unconventional move, Bernadine purchases Henry Adams online, but her path to restoring it to its former glory is not without obstacles.
As Bernadine embarks on this ambitious journey, she finds herself locking horns with the tenacious mayor, Trent July. Together, they must navigate the challenges of revitalising the town while uncovering unexpected sparks of connection and perhaps even a touch of personal glory along the way. “Bring on the Blessings” is a heartwarming tale of resilience, community, and the power of love to mend the wounds of the past.
Lisa Kleypas – The Queen of Historical Romance
When it comes to the realm of historical romance, Lisa Kleypas stands as an unparalleled luminary. Undoubtedly one of the best romance authors writing historically based works (at least IMO), she embarked on her writing journey in 1985 at the tender age of 21 and has since charted a remarkable path through the world of romance literature. Kleypas’s literary journey began with a few swift duologies, but she soon embarked on grand adventures with elaborate multi-book series. Her most acclaimed series include The Wallflowers and The Hathaways, both masterfully capturing the essence of mid-19th century London.
Within the pages of her novels, readers are invited to traverse the intricate tapestry of love and society, where various families strive to find their place and passion amidst the backdrop of historical London. One of Kleypas’s most outstanding strengths is her profound understanding of the era, seamlessly weaving historical context into each story.
Must-Read: Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways #1)
In Mine Till Midnight, readers are introduced to the remarkable Amelia Hathaway, a woman grappling with the complexities of her new life in aristocratic society, following a surprise inheritance. Her responsibilities extend beyond adapting to the aristocracy; she must also tame her spirited younger siblings. Amidst these challenges, Amelia finds herself entangled in a web of emotions, particularly her feelings for the enigmatic upper-class renegade, Cam Rohan.
Cam, unlike Amelia, hails from a less privileged background, yet he yearns to reclaim his rightful place in society. However, his burning desire for Amelia complicates his carefully laid plans. When Amelia turns to Cam for assistance in a delicate situation, he finds himself unable to resist her plea.
Mine Till Midnight is a captivating tale of love, class, and the irresistible pull of desire in a world where society’s expectations collide with the dictates of the heart. Lisa Kleypas’s storytelling prowess shines brightly in this unforgettable journey through the pages of history and romance.
Julia Quinn: From Medical Studies to Romance Novels
Julia Quinn’s career path is as intriguing as the narratives she weaves in her celebrated novels. In the early nineties, while preparing for a future in medicine, Quinn found herself drawn to writing romance novels alongside her studies. Her academic journey led her to gain admission to Yale Medical School, but it was here that she realised her true passion lay not in medicine, but in the rich tapestries of historical romance. Deciding to follow her heart, Quinn left Yale to dedicate herself to writing, a choice that established her as a distinguished figure in historical romance literature.
Must Read: The Duke And I
One of her most compelling works, The Duke and I, sets a brilliant precedent for the Bridgerton series. The plot unfolds in Regency England, where Lady Daphne Bridgerton and Duke Simon Basset engage in a pretend courtship. Simon intends to dodge the marital expectations of society, whilst Daphne aims to invoke jealousy amongst her prospective suitors. However, as their feigned interactions ignite genuine emotions, Daphne begins to question the façade, especially when their closeness during a dance stirs desires too strong to ignore. This clever spin on the fake relationship trope has endeared Quinn to fans of classic romance, cementing her reputation as a master of the genre.
You might also want to check out my reviews of the follow-on books The Viscount Who Loved Me, An Offer From A Gentleman, and Romancing Mr Bridgerton, To Sir Phillip, With Love, When He Was Wicked, and It’s In His Kiss (I’ve not quite got to On The Way To The Wedding yet, but I will!).
Small-Town & Western Romance Authors
Small-town and Western romance is where the stakes feel personal, the towns are tiny, and absolutely everyone has an opinion about your love life. These stories trade glittering ballrooms for ranches, diners, bookshops, and back porches, where second chances hit harder and reputations travel faster than Wi-Fi. I write small-town romance myself, so I have a particular soft spot for this corner of the genre. If you like tight-knit communities, stubborn heroes, and heroines who have to decide whether to run or finally stay, this is your lane.
Carolyn Brown Weaver of Heartwarming Westerns
Carolyn Brown is a highly acclaimed American author known for her captivating and heart-warming stories that touch the lives of readers. With a knack for creating compelling narratives that blend humour, warmth, and a touch of Southern charm, Carolyn Brown has established herself as a beloved and prolific author whose stories leave a lasting impact on readers around the world.
It’s easy to see why Carolyn Brown is deserving of a spot on this list. Her true specialty lies in the realm of cowboy romance, where she skilfully crafts stories set in the vibrant landscapes of the southern United States. If you’re not a fan of cowboy tales, you’re unlikely to enjoy these. But if you ARE there are few who can rival Brown for the title of best cowboy romance author.
Her tales often revolve around a brooding, enigmatic rancher, blessed with a tall, dark, and troubled demeanour. At the same time, Brown’s narratives introduce strong-willed heroines who, despite their initial resistance, find themselves unexpectedly entangled in a passionate love affair amidst the scorching Texas, Tennessee, or Oklahoma sun.
Through her evocative storytelling, Carolyn Brown transports readers to a world where romance blooms under the sultry southern skies, igniting hearts and captivating imaginations along the way.

Set in a picturesque forest enclave in California, the series delves into a multitude of captivating love stories. Whether it’s the transformation of a toughened marine discovering his tender side or a weary sous chef navigating a sizzling romance (if you catch our drift), Virgin River offers an abundant array of romantic prospects.

Featuring Alexandra Breckenridge among other great actors, the popularity of the show (which quite closely sticks to the source material) is a testament to the quality of the writing.

Laurie Gilmore writes the kind of small-town romance you reach for when you want warmth, comfort, and a guaranteed emotional payoff. Lauren Landish – Crafting Irresistible Book Boyfriends

With covers featuring chiselled muscles that practically leap off the page, her novels promise readers an unforgettable, steamy adventure. While her works can be delightfully explicit, Landish also weaves in a plethora of enchanting romantic elements to keep her audience thoroughly captivated. This book is akin to the written embodiment of that catchy Fifth Harmony song, promising an experience that’ll leave you enthralled and entertained from start to finish. If you enjoyed that music video, Mr. Fixit is bound to become your literary anthem.
The Best Romantasy Authors
Romantasy is a strange beast. Some authors built their entire careers around romantic fantasy and helped define the genre. Others are primarily fantasy writers who happen to have delivered one of the most unforgettable romantic arcs you’ll ever read. Because of that, this list includes both the writers who live and breathe romantasy, and those whose crossover into romance is simply too good to ignore.
There are authors who wrote some of the best romantasy books going, who didn’t make this list, purely because they can’t be considered romance authors. If you go looking for their work expecting sweeping love stories, you’ll find sublime fantasy instead and quite rightly wonder why I sent you there.
With that in mind, these are my top picks for the best romantasy authors going.
Sarah J. Maas: Master of Epic Fantasy
Sarah J. Maas has captivated millions with her intricately woven fantasy worlds and multifaceted characters. Starting with Throne of Glass written in her youth, Maas’s writing career has flourished, establishing her as a powerhouse in both Young Adult and New Adult genres. Her narratives often explore themes of power, identity, and sacrifice, resonating deeply with an extensive fanbase. Maas also created the A Court of Thorns and Roses and Crescent City series, both of which have become phenomena on platforms like BookTok and Bookstagram. These series have not only amplified her impact but have also solidified her status in the fantasy literature community by drawing a broader audience to her complex characters and richly detailed universes.
Must Read: Kingdom of Ash
Kingdom of Ash, the monumental finale of the Throne of Glass series, showcases Maas at her epic best. This volume brings the saga of Aelin Galathynius to a triumphant close, blending intense action, deep emotional arcs, and sweeping battles. As Aelin fights to save her kingdom from destruction, Maas explores the resilience of the human spirit and the power of friendship and love. This gripping conclusion not only satisfies long-time followers but also secures Maas’s status as a staple of modern fantasy literature. While it may seem odd to list this as the must-read when it comes at the end of an eight book series, but Maas started writing these books when she was sixteen. While I loved the whole series, her writing naturally matured as she did, and by the time the series culminated it was at its best.
It’s also well worth checking out her infamous ACOTAR series, starting by reading my reviews of the first book in that series, the titular, A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Erin Morgenstern – Romantic Fantasy That Feels Like A Dream
Erin Morgenstern occupies that rare space where fantasy and romance intertwine so seamlessly you almost forget you’re reading a love story until it quietly devastates you. Her writing leans atmospheric rather than explosive, favouring mood, symbolism, and slow-burning connection over grand declarations. If you prefer your romance threaded through something dreamlike and slightly uncanny, Morgenstern delivers it with precision and restraint.
Must Read: The Night Circus
Set within the black-and-white tents of a mysterious travelling circus that only opens at night, The Night Circus follows two magicians, Celia Bowen and Marco Alisdair, bound into a lifelong magical duel neither of them truly consented to. What begins as competition becomes connection, and what is meant to end in defeat slowly transforms into something far more dangerous: love. Lush, immersive, and exquisitely controlled, this is romance as atmosphere, as longing, as inevitability. It does not shout. It lingers. This isn’t just one of my favourite romantasy books, it’s one of my favourite books, period.
Leigh Bardugo – Hard Hitting, Deep Feels Romantasy
I would be remiss if I did not admit that my favourite book of Bardugo’s is actually Ninth House. That one also happens to be my favourite Dark Academia novel, despite containing virtually no romance. And yet it somehow hums with an exquisite, low-burn romantic tension that lingers through Hell Bent and, I hope, culminates explosively when the final book lands.
Bardugo perfectly illustrates the complication I mentioned earlier. Some fantasy authors write phenomenal romance without ever positioning themselves as romance writers. She is not strictly a romantasy author. But the emotional charge of the romantic arcs in her Grishaverse books is so defining that excluding her would feel disingenuous.
Just know this. Her books are not uniformly romance-focused. They are dark, intricate fantasy first, with romantic tension that can quietly ruin you.
Must Read: Shadow and Bone (The Grisha Trilogy #1)
Shadow and Bone introduces Alina Starkov, an orphan who discovers she possesses a rare magical power that could save her war-torn kingdom. Drawn into the world of the Grisha and the magnetic Darkling, Alina must navigate power, politics, and temptation.
Fantasy first, romance threaded through it, this is the clearest example of Bardugo’s ability to blend magic with emotional tension and why she earns her place on this list.
Best Dark Romance Authors
I recently fell down a dark romance rabbit hole, so I have a lot more to say about which authors rank among the best in this sub-genre. But that will have to wait for another post. For now, here are my top three picks…
S.T. Abby – The Dark Romance Game-Changer
S.T. Abby made her mark on dark romance with a voice that was sharp, controlled, and utterly unflinching. Where many authors in the subgenre lean on shock or spectacle, Abby’s strength lay in precision. Her writing centred on strategic female rage, moral ambiguity, and relationships that existed in tension with violence rather than in spite of it. The result was work that felt deliberate, intelligent, and fiercely self-assured.
Though she published only one series under the S.T. Abby name, its impact was outsized. The Mindf*ck books shifted expectations around what a dark romance heroine could be, placing a calculating, unapologetic woman at the centre of the narrative and refusing to soften her edges for comfort. That choice resonated deeply with readers and helped solidify the series as a defining moment within modern dark romance.
S.T. Abby was the dark romance pen name of C.M. Owens, a prolific contemporary romance author who probably deserves her own spot further up this list for her regular work. The fact she mads her pen name ‘stabby’ while writing about a female serial killer whose weapon of choice is a knife, kind of tells you everything you need to know here. She sadly passed away before writing anything further under the S.T. Abby name. Even so, the influence of her work continues to ripple through the subgenre.
Must Read: The Scarlet Angel (Mindf*ck Series #3)
The Scarlet Angel is where everything starts to unravel. We finally learn what truly happened to Lana, and it is darker and harder to sit with than anything that came before. This is the book that forces you to understand her trauma in full, and to confront exactly what it has shaped her into.
It is also the point where her complexity becomes undeniable. We see how fiercely protective she is of Logan, the lengths she will go to keep him safe, even from another serial killer. The so-called Bogeyman might terrify everyone else, but beside Lana he feels almost secondary. As people begin pulling at the threads of her secrets, she has to navigate exposure without crossing lines that would make her irredeemable. The Scarlet Angel delivers the perfect payoff to the brutal cliffhanger at the end of Book Two, and it is here that we see Lana clearly: damaged, ruthless, loving, and still somehow deserving of a happy ending.
H.D. Carlton – The Queen of Pitch-Black Obsession
H.D. Carlton has become one of the most recognisable names in modern dark romance because she does not flirt with darkness. She moves in. The Cat and Mouse duet is a boundary-pushing blend of obsession, vigilantism, and psychological horror, written with the kind of unflinching confidence that dares the reader to look away. Carlton’s work is controversial for a reason. She leans into morally vile behaviour, forces you to sit with it, and then complicates it further, asking uncomfortable questions about desire, danger, and what readers are actually consuming when they fall for an anti-hero.
What earns her a place on a list like this isn’t perfection. It’s impact. When Carlton is on form, she creates stories that feel like being dragged through the dark and coming out the other side changed. She doesn’t offer tidy healing arcs or sanitised trauma, and she understands that dark romance lives and dies on intensity. That said, she’s not an auto-five-star author for me. Phantom proved that: the gothic atmosphere was delicious, but the romance itself didn’t land because the hero didn’t. Even so, at her best, Carlton delivers the kind of pitch-black, compulsively readable dark romance that defines the current era of the genre.
Must Read: Hunting Adeline (Cat and Mouse Duet #2)
Hunting Adeline is where Carlton proves she understands exactly what she unleashed in book one. The moral grey area around consent is obliterated as Adeline endures real, graphic brutality, forcing a visceral reframing of everything that came before. Her trauma is not glossed over or magically healed; it is slow, jagged, and psychologically raw. Zade evolves from obsessive predator into something closer to a vigilante monster with a god complex, directing his violence outward in incandescent revenge. It is pitch black, punishing, and strangely cathartic, and it’s the book that cements Carlton as a defining voice in modern dark romance.
Obviously this isn’t the first book in the series, and you should start there. But my advice would be, assuming you’re comfortable with this level of darkness, to persevere even if you’re on the fence about Haunting Adeline. I didn’t fully appreciate how good book one was until I finished book two and saw the duet in full context.
It’s a masterpiece of dark romance. You will miss the point if you give up after book one. Not that book one is bad, not at all; it’s a solid four-star read for me. But you may reach the end thinking it was overhyped.
It wasn’t. You’re just not done yet.
