I am British. More specifically, English. I’m also a writer. By day I copywriter for clients, by night I pen steamy romance novels, often with a mysterious twist. As a result, I have a special place in my heart for British romance novels. And they’re not as common as you might think. A lot of British authors end up setting their novels elsewhere, particularly in the US. So finding romance novels set in Britain is a treat. Finding contemporary romance novels set in Scotland? I cannot tell you how much I am vibing the Scottish setting for spicy romance. I never realised this was a thing I was missing in life until one fateful day when I caught a train with a friend and forgot to take a book with me. She lent me her copy of VH Nicolson’s Hunting Eden, which fortuitously was still in her bag after she’d finished it the day before and going spare.
I devoured that novel. Never before had I realised that what the contemporary romance genre needed was a genuinely great writer who was happy to set everything in Scotland because she’s actually Scottish.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, dear beloved readers, the gal is the genuine Scottish article. I mention this because I’ve read quite a few ‘British romances’ recently that may have been set in Britain, but were clearly written by an American. The difference between a native writing about their home turf and someone writing about a place they’ve visited, or perhaps just Googled, is phenomenal.
VH Nicolson has captivated readers with her extensive array of contemporary romance novels set against the lush backdrop of Scotland. This author was also a revelation for me in that it was my first experience of sports romance, and I am now obsessed.
I find this particularly bizarre because I really hate sports! For some reason, though, I can’t get enough of spicy tales of sporty dudes doing romantic stuff in Scotland.
Like, seriously, who knew this was a thing?? And why didn’t they tell me sooner?
For those who, like me, need contemporary romance novels set in Scotland on their shelf and in their dreams, here are all the wonderfully spicy Scottish tales from VH Nicholson. PLUS a load more romance novels set in Scotland that I’ve found (since I’m now, apparently, completely obsessed!)…
The Triple Trouble Series
VH Nicolson’s Triple Trouble Series is a captivating collection of contemporary romances set in the enchanting landscapes of Scotland. Each book is a stand alone novel, following one of three sisters – Eden, Ella and Eva. While the stories are connected by the siblings, you can read them all alone and in any order (which I love!). The series explores different facets of love and the challenges romance brings, combining rich narratives with a Scottish flair that enhances the spice and drama.
Hunting Eden
Hunting Eden delivers a comedic sports romance. Eden, the protagonist, navigates the complexities of love and life intertwined with the world of sports. The novel’s humour and charm set the tone for the series, offering a light-hearted yet poignant exploration of romance.

Inevitable Ella
Inevitable Ella delves into themes of second chances and redemption. This narrative follows Ella as she reencounters her former love, exploring the emotional and logistical complexities that reignite from their past. The Scottish setting provides a backdrop that amplifies the story’s emotional depth, making it a compelling read about lost love and the paths to recovery.
Unexpected Eva
Concluding the series, Unexpected Eva tackles an age-gap romance fraught with societal judgments. Eva’s relationship with her father’s much older friend tests family and societal boundaries, providing a dramatic and introspective look at unconventional love. This novel not only challenges norms but also wraps up the series with a powerful message about love’s endurance.

Nicolson’s ability to weave emotional depth with relatable characters against the Scottish backdrop makes the Triple Trouble Series a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention that these books come with some genius cover options. There are the sexy, sultry, men without shirts options, but there are also the extremely cute and discreet versions that make it a little less obvious you’re reading smut when you’re out and about in public!
The Boys of Castleview Cove Series
VH Nicolson’s The Boys of Castleview Cove series dives into the romantic lives of three distinct characters, each following one of three strapping blokes from Scotland’s scenic Castleview Cove.
The name of the place alone just screams romance, doesn’t it? This series blends unique romantic themes with a local charm that fans of Nicolson have come to adore.

Lincoln
Lincoln diverges from the typical Scottish backdrop of VH Nicolson’s previous works, taking readers on an adventurous journey to Los Angeles. In this vibrant setting, Lincoln, a character familiar to readers from Hunting Eden, seeks a reprieve from the pressures of running a family hotel in Scotland. His plan to enjoy a carefree life changes dramatically when he meets Violet West, a smart, sexy, intelligent woman whose presence challenges his views on love and commitment.
Their whirlwind romance, told from duel POV, is filled with intense chemistry and heartfelt exchanges, unfolds in the sun-drenched streets of LA. Lincoln navigates the complexities of a new romance while grappling with the impending end of his visa and responsibilities back home. Violet’s influence encourages Lincoln to reconsider what he wants from life and love, making their story a compelling narrative of self-discovery and passionate connection.
Jacob
Jacob delivers a gripping blend of romantic suspense and forbidden desires, marking the second book in The Boys of Castleview Cove Series. Set against the scenic backdrop of Castleview Cove, Jacob’s story unravels a complex tale of love found in the least expected places.
Jacob has been in love with Skye, his best friend’s ex-girlfriend, since they were teenagers. Bound by a bro-code that forbids dating each other’s exes, Jacob and Skye’s newfound attraction presents a tantalising dilemma. As they navigate their intensifying feelings, they tread a thin line between loyalty and love.
The story deepens with dark twists and a suspenseful narrative that challenges the characters’ futures together. Skye, previously seen as the girl-next-door, reveals a bolder, more daring side as she interacts with Jacob, the tattooed bad-boy with a surprisingly tender heart for her. Their journey is not just about breaking old pacts but also about discovering what true happiness means to them.

Owen
Owen concludes The Boys of Castleview Cove series with a dramatic and transformative love story. Fleeing from an arranged marriage that felt like a life sentence, Owen escapes not just from the altar but from his privileged life in Scotland. He finds himself in a new country, seeking freedom and a chance to redefine his future.
In his new life, Owen meets Jade, a strong, independent single mom whose presence changes everything. Jade helps Owen see the possibilities of a different life, far from the constraints and expectations of his past. Their instant connection and intense chemistry create a compelling narrative of self-discovery and passionate love.
Their journey together is filled with challenges, including Owen’s struggle to leave his past behind and the looming threat of his family’s expectations catching up with him. Yet, through their relationship, Owen learns what it means to truly live and love freely. Jade’s influence and the bond they share transform Owen, helping him grow into the man he wants to be.
Christmas And The Geek (Previously Christmas in Castleview Cove)
Christmas and the Geek (previously titled Christmas in Castleview Cove) is an enchanting (if very short!) festive romance that truly captures the magic of the holiday season. Holly, who has never been a fan of Christmas, finds herself alone after throwing out her cheating boyfriend. As if things couldn’t get worse, her restaurant’s computer system crashes, adding to her holiday woes. Enter Gabe, a charming IT expert who arrives to save the day and, unexpectedly, Holly’s Christmas spirit.
From the moment Gabe steps in, the chemistry between him and Holly is undeniable. Their whirlwind romance, filled with witty banter and heartfelt moments, unfolds beautifully against the backdrop of festive cheer. Gabe’s arrival brings a much-needed dose of joy and romance into Holly’s life, transforming her from a Christmas cynic to someone who starts to believe in holiday miracles.

Each novel in this series stands alone with interlinking characters, making them enjoyable individually or as a collective experience. Nicolson’s skill in creating engaging, emotionally resonant stories shines throughout this series, making it a must-read for those who enjoy contemporary romance novels set in Scotland.

This sense of place enriches the narratives, making them more relatable and engaging.
Scotland’s picturesque scenery, from the rolling Highlands to the bustling cities, offers a romantic and sometimes dramatic backdrop that complements the intense emotions and complex relationships in Nicholson’s novels.
